What is Salutogenisis?
Salutogenesis is an approach to health that focuses on the factors that support human health and wellbeing, rather than on factors that cause disease (pathogenesis). The term was coined by medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky in 1979, who introduced the concept to explore how people manage stress and stay well.
At the heart of the salutogenic model is the idea of a 'sense of coherence', which comprises three components:
- Comprehensibility: The belief that the world is structured and predictable.
- Manageability: The feeling that one has the resources to meet the demands of life.
- Meaningfulness: The sense that life challenges are worthy of investment and engagement.
This model suggests that individuals with a strong sense of coherence are more likely to perceive stressors as manageable and meaningful, thereby maintaining better health.
A Shift from Pathogenisis to Salutogenisis
Traditional health models often focus on pathogenesis—the study of disease origins. In contrast, salutogenesis shifts the focus to health origins, asking, "What keeps people healthy?" This perspective encourages a proactive approach to health, emphasising the development of resources and capacities that support wellbeing.
By adopting a salutogenic approach, we aim to equip you with brain-based tools to make informed decisions and live a more fulfilled life. It's all about choice: we provide the tools, and you decide how to use them to create the changes you want to see.
Salutogenesis and Salutegenics
At Salutegenics, we embrace the principles of salutogenesis by focusing on what keeps individuals healthy and resilient. Our programs and workshops are designed to enhance your sense of coherence, providing you with the knowledge and tools to understand your brain's influence, empowering you to make informed choices that lead to lasting positive change.
We believe in translating complex, up-to-the-minute brain science into clear, relatable strategies you can actually use every day. By understanding the biology that influences your behaviour, you gain the power to choose how you respond to life's challenges.
